Description : Facing the challenges of industrial supply chains (demand volatility, supply chain fragility, loss of priorities, etc.), planning methods have not evolved much since the invention of MRP in the 1980s. No Chain Planning offers a major breakthrough from historical concepts by filling the gaps of MRP and putting the customer back at the heart of the supply chain.

This new methodology, the result of over ten years of research and development, aims to transform industrial planning by connecting every actor in the chain to the actual customer demand, and providing two essential signals for planning: the "Must-Do" and the "Know-How". In automated intralogistics systems, workstation processes are often poorly optimized, unintuitive, and prone to errors. The Kardex innovation team examined how work processes could be sustainably improved by providing optimal support to employees through intelligent technology. The following objectives were identified:

- Improved ergonomics through simple and intuitive user guidance

- Significant increase in productivity

- Substantial reduction in errors


Storage bins are generally subdivided into several compartments to allow the storage of multiple different items and optimize stock density, a crucial need for logisticians. To help operators identify the right item in the right compartment, laser pointers or other lighting systems are sometimes used. They mark the corresponding area where items must be picked. These installations are relatively expensive and require special control interfaces and additional hardware, which must be integrated into the operator's process.

To reduce this complexity and improve the process, the idea was born to integrate all functionalities into a comprehensive solution. We imagined replacing laser pointers and PC screens with a single projector that not only lights up the correct compartment but also projects all process-related information onto the workstation surface.

With our Kardex IPA ("Intuitive Picking Assistant") solution, we follow the trend of natural user interfaces, making a technological leap forward in human-machine interaction at order picking stations. All relevant information is projected directly onto the control surface (to the right or left of the opening) for the user. The user is guided throughout the picking process by displaying the item to be picked, the picking position in the container, and the quantity to be picked. The display is minimized to reduce the risk of errors and is fully customizable according to the client's process.

The solution is a standalone and compact module. It includes a projector, a 3D camera, and a computing unit that manages motion analysis, projector control, and communication with the warehouse management system. The projector sends all relevant information, including product images, directly onto the workstation control surface. This allows the user to keep their focus on their work without having to turn to an external user interface (PC screen) for information. Beyond a notable productivity improvement, the operator’s physical strain and visual fatigue are significantly reduced, which helps retain logistics staff who are increasingly difficult to recruit nowadays.
